Quit Smoking

Preparing for a Quit-Smoking Conversation With Your Pharmacist

A quit attempt is easier to plan when you know your triggers, what you tried before and what kind of support you are willing to use. Bring that information to the conversation.

Preparing for a Quit-Smoking Conversation With Your Pharmacist

A quit attempt is easier to plan when you know your triggers, what you tried before and what kind of support you are willing to use. Bring that information to the conversation.

Choose a goal you can describe

You do not need a perfect plan before asking for help. Be ready to say whether you want to quit on a specific date, reduce first, or understand treatment options before deciding.

Describe your smoking pattern

Note approximately how much you smoke, when the first cigarette of the day usually occurs and which situations trigger the strongest urges. That information helps make the discussion more specific.

Bring your medication list

Tell the pharmacist about prescription medicines, OTC products, supplements and important health conditions. Some quit-smoking medicines require a prescription or may not be appropriate for everyone.

Review what happened on past quit attempts

Write down which strategies or medicines you tried, what helped, what side effects occurred and what led you back to smoking. A previous attempt is useful information, not wasted effort.

Ask about combining treatment and support

CDC reports that counseling and medication are both effective approaches and that using them together can improve the chance of quitting. Ask about coaching, quitline support and medication options that fit your situation.

Plan for the first difficult week

Identify the times, people or routines most strongly associated with smoking and decide what you will do instead. Keep the pharmacy or healthcare contact information available if medication questions come up.
